Knowing what you’re supposed to do and actually doing it are two different things, but you need to understand that if you don’t get into ‘doing’ your situation is likely to remain the same or even get worse.

This applies to weight management as well. Most of us are aware, or we think we are aware of what is supposed to be done to help us in weight loss as it has been shown to have various benefits such as;

  • Disease prevention – Obesity is linked to chronic conditions such as Metabolic Syndrome, Diabetes, Several types of cancers, Heart problems, Hypertension and even Gut/stomach problems,
  • Mental health and clarity – Proper activities towards weight management have been shown to have very positive benefits in mental outcomes to people struggling with depression, social anxiety and more
  • Disease Management -Weight loss has been shown to have several benefits in management of various chronic disorders such as better blood sugar control in diabetic patients, better recovery and treatment uptake for cancer patients, improves blood pressure and better outcomes in cardiovascular risks, and more

However, I understand that getting into the rhythm of weight management that is dietary adjustments, physical exercise, habit change and more can be a very tasking thing to do and that is why on this specific article, I explore the mindset shift that will help you get into it and adapt better.

The first mindset shift you need to have is;

  1. Acceptance – Most of us avoid owning our problems, we tend to deviate from dealing with what is actually hurting us because most of the time it’s not pretty to deal with. However, unless you accept that your weight is actually a problem, you’ll not see the need to start on the solutions. Most of us find all the excuses not to start. One of the most common ones used even on social media is that the BMI is not a measure of health. I understand that it’s not a clear indicator of good health, but it’s very rare that you’ll find a Physician or a Dietitian encouraging weight loss and your body composition is not wanting. The scale is not the only measure of health, but it’s an important indicator of Health.
  2. Understand that no one will do it for you – unless it’s surgery ofcos-  but even then, behaviour, attitude and Habits MUST change for you to get the health or the physical benefits 😜. It’s ok to be confused, to even get sad about the news that your health is at risk but it’s more important to get out of the pity party and fast too, to ensure that you actualise the needed change.
  3. Start with the winner mentality – this to me is basically starting with the end goal in mind. It’s not about faking it, it’s more about visualisation. After you ditch the pity party, get to work. Write down your goals ( start with understanding why you need it, it’ll guide in coming up with SMART goals) have them in print ( photos as well) and get the needed help. If you can’t do it alone, that’s why some of us are actually trained to help people like You. Get in touch with a professional ( good thing about this, they can also help with goals and planning) and let’s do this. Keep in mind critics will be there, you’ll want to quit and stop because it’s easier but with the right help and clear goals you’ll get over the self doubt. ‘Its only impossible if you don’t try”
  4. Want a better you more than Fear – Ditch the fear – It’s scary to start, it’s scary to set futuristic goals but c’mon in the 21st century it’s even scary to breathe 🤣😂.

Remember that you got this and unless you start, nothing will happen.

Signed with love ❤️
