I remember my first time interacting with a diabetic client, immediately after second year during the long holidays as we awaited third year, I bombard him with all the knowledge that Dr. Kamuhu ( My Dietetics professor) had transferred and his response was, ‘Food is art, I learned to respect it and my body responds to that “. This alone has changed so much in the way I look at food. Not just as a Dietitian, but as a human being.

We are blessed with so many different colours when it comes to food. The artistic aspect combines the ability to mix them up in a creative yet nourishing but most importantly, a healthy way.

In this blog, we are going to explore the different things that you can do to show that you understand and respect food lol .

* The first thing is understanding why food exists in the first place, and this by the way it’s not just that so it can be eaten. Food ( Plants & animals) was a gift to mankind from God so that we can nourish and FUEL our body. When you respect food enough, you’ll be able to eat enough – not too much, not too little – just enough for your body to function optimally 💯

* The second thing is give meal preparation, serving and even the eating period the attention it deserves.. Understand that you need all the different food groups and in their natural colors and flavours and on top of this, understand how best to combine them to get the best nourishment and presentability. We are visual creatures, beautiful things are attractive to us so a well prepared and served meal will appear appetising.

* Another thing is create a relationship with food. Eating disorders have been with us from time memorial but the social media era is making it harder for someone struggling with an eating disorders.

One common characteristic of people struggling with an eating disorders is that they fear food which is a negative relationship.

So how can you improve the relationship you have with food?

Planning to be a mindful eater – have a plan on your nutrient requirements – stop calling them calories if they scare you- and purpose to nourish your body without feeling guilty. Read on the importance of a well fueled you, you can have a Dietitian or a Nutritionist walk with you if you need the extra help.

Be intuitive with your dietary practices – The crazy restrictions are usually a trigger. If you feel like you need some chocolate have a bar. I know the problem here comes with discipline so try as much as you can not to have access to too many, alternatively you can stock ok healthier alternatives like strawberries, apples, nuts, I swear they are just as fulfilling but you have to push yourself into the habit.

Remember to take things one step at a time, be gentle and patient with yourself. Don’t be too hard on yourself when you slip, remember that it took alot of strength to start in the first place, borrow from that strength. In my journey of content creation, so many times I’ve wanted to quit, but I always tell myself, ‘ Mumina you started this, have the guts, balls and patience to see it through ‘. You can borrow that from me too🤗

Remember food is Art , junk doesn’t have flavour, and it’s not good for you either ❤️❤️
