In an era where weighing less is glorified for both physical appearance and health benefits, alot of methods of achieving Weight loss are popping up on the internet every single day.
One of the methods that is currently popular is CALORIE RESTRICTION.
But what exactly is this? This is a situation where you are advised to eat less than what your body requires. For instance if your daily energy requirements is 3000kcals/day, you might be advised to do 1,500kcals/days. For sure even without any calculations, you’ll definitely loose the weight as expected. https://youtu.be/btQjBNAqGpE ( please show my YouTube channel some love 💕)
But is this really healthy?
Let’s dive into what drastic calorie restriction does to your body? Remember it’s not paired with adjusted metabolism so your body will be functioning at the same rate it was with the 3000 and since the supply is 1,500 it’ll be forced to source energy from your fat stores and this is where the weight loss comes in, but remember the body has adaptations to help it ‘ remain’ where it’s most comfortable and some of this include;
* Reducing the metabolic rate – this is not the healthiest thing as organ function will also be compromised. The reduced BMR means the body will now be ok with the 1,500kcals and it won’t need to cut down, infact other adaptations like,
* Hormonal adaptations – the brain through the hypothalamus, will trigger release of hormones like Ghrelin to make you eat more, insulin to store fats ( compensating for the loss) and more. https://youtu.be/btQjBNAqGpE
This is the main reason that calories Restrictions is the biggest FAD of the decade because, yes the short term and fast weight loss will happen but the effects are not the best. It can even influence your set weight in an upward direction.
Now that we have understood that drastic Restrictions are bad how then can you loose weight?
✅ Asses (with the help of a registered Dietitian) your actual intake and compare it to your NEEDED intake. If there’s a surplus ( which in most cases there is), then work by slowly reducing (actually through substitution to healthier options you’ll find yourself doing this so well.
Remember to target an increase in your metabolic health, hormonal balance rather than calorie restriction. When you achieve the two and an improved lifestyle, you’ll be able to achieve a sustained weight loss.
I hope this helped, if it did, please give it a like, comment and share and please follow my YouTube channel https://youtu.be/btQjBNAqGpE
