Most of us mistake self awareness with knowing our favourite colour, food and likes. Self awareness goes deeper than that. It is more of understanding your subconscious self.
✅For example, a self aware person understand triggers, environments, traits or behaviour that prompt either positive or negative emotions ( in this case we call them body responses) and by so doing, he or she is a better position to either keep off or improve associations with such.
✅ We all have some undesirable characteristics that we are either working on or should start working on after reading this article.
Self awareness not only helps you understand your triggers, but it is a great way of getting traits or habits that you might be doing that may not be desirable to your success, business, relationships or even family. It is also a great way of understanding toxic behaviours from others as well and put limits to protect your emotional, mental and physical well being.

✅ The third reason why you need to be self aware is that it promotes emotional intelligence. If you continuously assess yourself, your reactions and response, you can be able to gauge how good or bad you are when it comes to emotional response. Emotional intelligence dictates you be empathetic without letting it get to sympathy.
As humans, sometimes it can be difficult to differentiate the two because our genetic make up allows some forms of attachments whether physical, mental, emotionally or visual. A self aware person will have better understanding when things are getting out of hand and he/she is able to handle the situation before.
Another thing, a self aware person is also able to set clear boundaries of what they can or cannot accept in their space.
Do you think you are self aware?
Let’s continue with why self awareness is important in ensuring that Nutrition interventions are successful.
✅ A self aware person understands their strength. As a dietitian, it’s easier working with a self aware person than not. The main reason been, you can be able to plan capitalising on strengths and limiting the weaknesses- a smart Dietitian will understand that even the strongest person, has some weakness. It’s human nature.
✅ It’s easier to set goals with someone who’s self aware. In most of the time, people want or demand to be sold miracles which CANNOT work in dietetics practice. When setting goals, just like any other thing, the SMART criteria is used and in Nutrition we add the AFASS criteria of management.
✅ It’s easier to communicate to a self aware person. Nutrition interventions are not constant and it’s easier to work with a person who understands change might be necessary than not.
Remember it’s better to be self aware than not, but let’s not use it as an excuse to be rude, selfish or proud.
