Kenyans have been taking to the streets to protest against the current regime, voicing their frustration and anger. The issues driving these protests are multifaceted and deeply rooted in the country’s political and socio-economic fabric. From rampant corruption to inadequate essential services, the frustrations of the common Mwananchi could not be contained.

Key Issues Fueling Public Outrage:
- High Rates of Corruption: Kenya ranks 126th out of 180 countries globally in terms of corruption. This pervasive corruption undermines public trust and diverts resources away from essential services and Development projects.
- Lack of Accountability: There is a glaring lack of accountability regarding taxpayers’ funds. Misappropriation and embezzlement of public resources have become the norm, with little to no repercussions for the culprits. For instance, the recent exposure of the MP attempting to sell relief food meant for floods victims in his constituency -which is both sickening & Satanic – highlights the lack of accountability.
- Persistent Tribalism and Nepotism: Tribalism and nepotism continue to plague Kenya’s political and social systems. Appointments based on tribal affiliations or personal loyalties rather than merit undermine the effectiveness and efficiency of public institutions. This practice not only breeds resentment but also stifles national unity and progress.
- Increasing Poverty and Unemployment: High unemployment rates are a result of misappropriated investments and poor prioritization of government expenditure. This exacerbates poverty and limits economic opportunities for many Kenyans.
- Neglect of Essential Services: Critical sectors such as healthcare, education, and transportation are severely neglected. The common citizen struggles to access quality basic services, hindering overall development.
- Inappropriate Legislation: Many perceive members of parliament as corrupt and self-serving, prioritizing personal interests over the welfare of their constituents. This perception has fueled widespread dissatisfaction. The lack of independence and the self-serving nature of some members of parliament result in legislation that prioritizes personal interests over the needs or opinions of their constituents . The recent financial bills are a testament to this issue.
Public Demands: Kenyans are demanding accountability on bills, expenditure, revenue, and loans. The public is frustrated by the extravagant lifestyles of the political class, which starkly contrast with the economic hardships faced by ordinary citizens. The recent dismissals of all Cabinet Secretaries is seen as a positive step, but much more is expected from the President and his government.
The Way Forward: Insights and Proposals
- Strengthening Anti-Corruption Measures:
- Reconstitution of EACC, the body tasked with mapping and dealing with corruption matters in the country and maintaining its independence. The compromises members should go home to allow for effective investigations and prosecutions without political interference.
- Implement stringent penalties for corrupt practices to deter public officials from engaging in corruption.
- Enhancing Accountability and Transparency:
- Implement stringent measures to ensure transparency and accountability in the use of public funds. Establish independent oversight bodies to audit government expenditure and prosecute those found guilty of corruption and embezzlement
- Encourage citizen participation in budgeting processes to ensure funds are allocated to priority areas.
- Promoting Meritocracy:
- Implement policies that ensure public appointments are based on qualifications, experience, and capacity, rather than tribal affiliations or personal connections. This will enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of public institutions and reduce tribalism and nepotism.
- Encourage diversity and inclusion in public service to reflect the country’s demographics.
- Investing in Youth Employment:
- Prioritize investment in sectors that have high potential for job creation, such as technology, agriculture, and manufacturing.
- Develop vocational training programs to equip the youth with skills that match the job market demands. Investments in Higher Education should be looked into to stop the rage in our youths who are failing to attend Colleges & Varsities due to the revised rates. Education is a basic need.
- Revitalizing Essential Services:
- Increase funding for healthcare, education, and transportation to improve the quality and accessibility of these services.
- Establish monitoring mechanisms to ensure that funds allocated to these sectors are used effectively and efficiently.
- Legislative Reforms:
- Promote legislative independence to ensure laws are made in the best interest of the public.
- Strengthen the independence of the judiciary and other oversight institutions to hold lawmakers accountable for their actions.
- Encourage public participation in the legislative process to ensure that the needs and aspirations of the people are reflected in the laws.
- Establish open Channels of communication between the government and the people to help rebuild the TRUST.
- Stop Extra Judicial Killings: ‘You can’t kill us and Lead us at the same time’. The government is responsible for protecting the Constitution of the land which upholds and promotes the right to life, dignity, Freedom of Association, Speech and Picketing among others. The recent kidnapping, abductions and Murders of our Kenyan Youths is unacceptable. Those responsible MUST be held accountable to ensure there’s no repeat of such again. Human Rights must be maintained at all levels.

Kenyans are rightfully demanding a government that is accountable, transparent, and dedicated to the welfare of its people. Addressing the issues of corruption, tribalism, unemployment, and neglect of essential services is crucial for rebuilding trust and achieving sustainable development. The recent actions by the President and his government should be the starting point for deeper, more comprehensive reforms.
