At the start of the year, we’re often filled with excitement and anticipation for the next 12 months—rightly so, as it’s a blessing to witness a year begin and end. Many of us set goals during this time, whether it’s annually, quarterly, or biannually. We even outline our plans of action, but somewhere along the way, we forget to follow through.

Some of us start but struggle to stay consistent, while many of us keep pushing tasks to the next month. Before we know it, it’s August and  your gym membership has expired without you setting foot inside, your business plan remains a saved document, that draft email is still unsent, and the video idea you had is still just that—an idea. This is called procrastination.

Procrastination is delaying actions that could potentially change your life. I’m not here to blame you, though because I understand we are humans and change can be  hard. It requires mindset shifts, habit formation, and character development.

Our brains and bodies naturally resist change, leading us to procrastinate. But let’s talk about how you can overcome procrastination with simple strategies that have worked for me.

1️⃣ Set Realistic Goals
Start by setting goals within your current abilities and reach. We’ve all heard the phrase “aim for the stars and land on the moon,” but if you haven’t prepared your wings, how will you take off? If your goal is content creation, start by consistently posting on one platform, even if it’s just to family and friends. Embrace feedback and use it to improve. Along the way, you’ll need to develop resilience against negativity and mean comments designed to break your spirit. If someone criticizes you publicly, write them a letter—but don’t send it. Read it out loud to yourself and move on. Trust me, it works.

2️⃣ Plan for Consistency
Starting something new is challenging, but staying consistent is even harder. Imagine going to the gym for three months only to receive negative comments about your progress from your peers and friends—how would that make you feel? Discouraged? Most people quit at this stage, convincing themselves that the effort wasn’t worth it. But consistency requires planning for setbacks. Analyze your goals, assess your strengths and opportunities, and identify potential weaknesses and obstacles. Develop strategies to overcome these challenges and seek help if needed—but don’t quit.

3️⃣Celebrate your victories, no matter how small.
As a Registered Dietitian and content creator, I remember my first client from YouTube. I used that payment to buy myself a pair of shoes—a moment that needed to be celebrated. Just before this, I was close to quitting because people around me said I was wasting my time. Burnout was taking its toll on me because I hadn’t yet mastered the art of balance. But every milestone matters, and every achievement, big or small, is worth celebrating.

4️⃣ Plan for Rest
Burnout nearly made me stop creating content. As a one-person business, I handle market research, scripting, content creation, editing, and publishing. It took time to realize that to stay consistent, I needed to balance rest, personal life, and Mumina Wellness Solutions. Now, I have weekly goals for my Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok, YouTube, and blog at http://www.muminawellness.com, but this doesn’t stop me from going to bed before 11 p.m. In my first year, I would stay up until 3 a.m., trying to do it all, while still having other commitments. It almost broke me. I’ve since learned that taking a breather isn’t a waste of time—it’s essential for your health, hormones, weight, and overall quality of life.

Rest rejuvenates you, gives you momentum, and makes your content better because you’re energized and happy. And trust me, that excitement shows on camera. If I’m not feeling it, I won’t record, because my emotions will show—and if they do, I’ll likely end up deleting the content so I’d have wasted my time right? So what’s the point? Take a breather every once in a while, it’s ok.

As we step into a new month, remember this: if you don’t start working on your goals and dreams, no one else will. And if someone else does, all you’ll be left with is the regret of thinking, “I was going to do that.” Don’t let procrastination hold you back—start today.
