Let’s be honest, — between early mornings, school runs, tight budgets, and chasing your career or side hustle, who really has time to steam nduma or boil maize before 7am?
And yet, you’re constantly told to “just eat whole foods.” But how?
If this sounds like you, you’re not alone — and you’re definitely not a failure.
I’m Lilian Mumina, a Registered Dietitian and a mom — and even with all my training, I don’t always get it perfect either. Sometimes, I’m grabbing that hot smoky mutura or smokie from the cleanest street vendor I can find — because hey, safety first, right?
But what I never compromise on — and what I teach every mom I work with — is this:
Healthy eating isn’t about being perfect. It’s about being intentional.
Let’s Talk: Why the Food You Choose Matters More Than You Think

That mandazi or soft white bread you had for breakfast? It’s convenient, affordable — and let’s be honest — comforting. But here’s the issue:
- They’re highly refined
- Low in fiber
- Stripped of nutrients
- And they spike your blood sugar fast (then crash it even faster).
Now, imagine swapping that with boiled ngwaci (sweet potatoes), a handful of nuts, or snackable veggies like cucumber or carrots.
It’s not just healthier — it’s sustainable, affordable, and kid-friendly.
So What’s the Real Problem?
Time.
Energy.
Planning.
And the simple fact that when junk is in the house, it will get eaten. That’s why I’m such a big advocate of meal prepping — not because it’s trendy, but because it works.
Meal prep isn’t about cooking five dishes on Sunday.
It’s about having boiled maize ready in the fridge, having fruits portioned and washed, or roasting nduma while doing laundry. Simple steps = big impact.
Here’s the ABCD Trick I Teach Moms:
A — Always prepare in advance
B — Buy local, whole foods where possible
C — Choose nutrient-dense over fast-filling
D — Don’t wait for perfection, just start where you are
