Scrolling through TikTok the other day, I came across a trending video from a well-known lawyer turned mommy influencer. She confidently shared how she used formula from week one, introduced pacifiers early, weaned her twins at four months, and still managed to “raise strong babies.”

Her tone? Persuasive. Her vibe? Glamorous. Her page? Full of content on yacht parties, luxury travels, and back-to-back brunches — with barely any real-life footage of those “well-raised” babies.

As a Registered Dietitian, I cringed. Not because her life is enviable, but because thousands of new moms are taking notes from someone whose parenting journey is more aesthetic than hands-on. And therein lies the danger: when personal preferences are marketed as universal truths.

Let’s set the record straight and debunk 8 common breastfeeding myths you’ve probably come across — online or even in your own circles.

Myth 1: “Formula is just as good as breast milk.”

Reality: Formula is a valuable alternative when necessary, but breast milk is biologically tailored to your baby’s needs. It contains living cells, antibodies, enzymes, and hormones that formula simply can’t replicate. Research shows breastfed babies have stronger immunity, fewer allergies, and better digestion.

Myth 2: “You need to give water to babies in hot weather.”

Truth: Breast milk is 87% water — even in hot climates. Giving extra water can displace breast milk, reduce nutrient intake, and in some cases, lead to water intoxication in infants under six months.

Myth 3: “You can’t breastfeed if you have small breasts.”

Reality: Breast size doesn’t determine milk production. What matters is breast tissue and hormonal response. Many women with smaller breasts produce more than enough milk ( Speaking from experience)— and those with larger breasts can also struggle, especially without proper support.

Myth 4: “Pacifiers help with soothing, so it’s okay to introduce them early.”

Caution: Introducing pacifiers too early (before breastfeeding is well established, typically around 4-6 weeks) can cause nipple confusion and interfere with baby’s latch and milk supply.

Myth 5: “You must wean at 4-6 months.”

Scientific Guidance: WHO and UNICEF recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months — with continued breastfeeding up to two years or beyond, alongside appropriate complementary foods.

Weaning early not only cuts short the immune and bonding benefits of breastfeeding, but also introduces digestion and allergy risks prematurely.

Myth 6: “Breastfeeding ruins your body and social life.”

Let’s be honest: Parenthood changes everything. But blaming breastfeeding for a lack of parties, sleep, or “freedom” is short-sighted.

What’s missing from that TikTok lawyer’s glamorous story is the support system, nannies, financial stability, and lifestyle flexibility that most moms don’t have.

Many new moms need real strategies — not escape plans.

Myth 7: “If the baby cries after feeding, your milk isn’t enough.”

Explanation: Babies cry for many reasons — gas, discomfort, overstimulation, or needing to suck for comfort. It doesn’t always mean low milk supply. Only a qualified nutritionist or lactation consultant can help you assess true milk adequacy.

Myth 8: “What worked for another mom will work for me.”

Every baby is different. Every mom is different. What worked for a TikTok star, your sister-in-law, or a celebrity may not be right for you — especially if it wasn’t grounded in evidence or guided by a health professional.
