As we launch World Breastfeeding Week August 2025, let’s kick off with a much-asked question from moms in my inbox and coaching sessions:
👉🏽 “Do galactagogues really help boost milk supply?”
📌 Short answer? Yes — but it’s not that simple.
💡 What are Galactagogues?
Galactagogues are substances (herbs, foods, or medications) that support and enhance breastmilk production. They work by stimulating the hormones involved in lactation — especially prolactin and oxytocin.
Some help by:
🔸 Supporting overall maternal nutrition
🔸 Calming stress that blocks let-down
🔸 Boosting hydration and blood circulation
🔸 Promoting glandular activity in the breasts
🥣 Common Natural Galactagogues You Can Add to Your Daily Routine:
🌾 Fenugreek – Found in teas or added to porridge
🌿 Moringa – Packed with iron and calcium, great in smoothies
🥥 Coconut & Coconut Milk – Healthy fats for energy and milk quality
🌰 Oats – Easy breakfast option; high in iron & beta-glucan
🧅 Garlic – May improve milk flavor and baby’s feeding behavior
🌻 Fennel seeds – Soothes digestion & supports lactation
🧃 Hydration – Plain water, herbal teas, fresh juices
☕ How to Incorporate Them Without Overwhelm:
✅ Add moringa powder to your daily smoothie or soup
✅ Take warm fenugreek tea twice a day
✅ Cook with onions, garlic, and cumin often
✅ Prepare oatmeal with nuts and dates for breakfast
✅ Replace sodas with hydrating teas or infused water
✅ Try lactation-supporting snacks (yes, I can show you how!)
But remember: galactagogues work best when paired with proper latch, frequent feeding or pumping, and rest. There’s no magic food without addressing the fundamentals.
